Adult Autism Assessments: Understand Yourself with a Neuro-Affirming Approach

Autism assessments and autism diagnosis are not one size fits all. Navigating the world as an autistic adult – or as an AuDHD or neurodivergent adult can be challenging – especially if you’ve spent years wondering why things feel different for you. At Mindworx Psychology, we offer comprehensive, neuro-affirming autism assessments designed to provide clarity, validation, and access to the right support.

Unlike quick online tests, our assessments are conducted by expert psychologists who are up to date with the latest science, and who take the time to truly understand your experiences. There isn’t “one type of Autism”, and despite what you might hear on Tik-Tok, there can also be other explanations for quirky behaviours. If you are investing in an assessment, we want to make sure you can trust it.

Our holistic autism assessments are not just about ruling autism in or out. We know that it’s rare to have one form of neurodivergence, so as standard we will also be checking for ADHD, AuDHD profiles, dyslexia and other commonly occurring neurotypes. In addition, we’ll be looking at the whole of your mental and physical health.

Why Seek an Autism Assessment as an Adult ?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Many adults have gone through life feeling different but without a formal diagnosis. If you’ve ever wondered whether you might be autistic, seeking an assessment can provide clarity, validation, and access to the right support.

Many adults come to us after years of feeling misunderstood, struggling with social interactions, sensory sensitivities, or masking their true selves to fit in. Understanding your neurotype can help you:

  • Gain self-awareness and self-acceptance – Understanding your neurotype can help you embrace who you are.

  • Develop strategies that work for you – Learn personalised techniques to navigate daily life with more ease.

  • Access workplace accommodations and supports – A formal diagnosis can open doors to resources and legal protections.

  • Improve relationships and communication – Gain insight into how you connect with others and how to set boundaries.

  • Find community and connection – Engage with other autistic adults who share similar experiences.

Our Neuro-Affirming Approach

We believe that autism is a difference, not a disorder. Our assessments focus on understanding your unique strengths and challenges rather than pathologising them. We use respectful, strengths-based language and prioritise your lived experience in the diagnostic process.

We are a neuro-affirming practice and offer adult autism assessments free from stigma, shame and judgement. You won’t hear us use words like ASD or autism disorder or disability. You will hear words like autistic neurotype, neurodiversity, unique, and quirky.

Our language, just like the science, is continually evolving, and it’s important to avoid harmful language.

A Team That Embraces Neurodiversity

At Mindworx Psychology, we walk the talk. Our team includes neurotypical, autistic, AuDHD, and ADHD psychologists, creating an inclusive and affirming space for all.

We believe that neurodiversity brings unique strengths, and quite a few challenges too. Our workplace itself is an example of how well it can work when the right supports and accommodations are in place for everyone.

Authenticity matters, and we are committed to providing assessments and support in a way that truly understands and respects neurodivergent experiences.

The Assessment Process

At Mindworx Psychology, we provide comprehensive and neuro-affirming autism assessments tailored to children, teens and adults. Our process is designed to be supportive and empowering, ensuring that you feel understood throughout.

  1. Initial Consultation – We start with a conversation to understand your experiences, strengths, and challenges.
  2. Comprehensive Assessment – Using gold-standard assessment tools, including the ADOS when needed. We have a preference for neuro-affirming assessments such as the MIGDAS whenever possible depending on the purpose of the assessment, and we gather a complete picture through clinical interviews and self-report questionnaires.
  3. Feedback and Diagnosis – We provide a detailed report with insights into your neurodivergent traits and recommendations for support and accommodations.
  4. Post-Diagnosis Support – Diagnosis is just the beginning. We offer guidance on next steps, including therapy, coaching, and community resources.
