A Parent’s Guide to Child & Adolescent Therapy

Supporting Your Child’s Journey in Norwest

Taking the first step to seek professional support for your child can feel daunting for the entire family. As parents, we want to provide our children with every opportunity to thrive, yet navigating emotional, behavioural, or developmental hurdles often leaves us with more questions than answers.

At Mindworx Psychology in Norwest, we believe that early intervention is vital in helping children and adolescents build lasting resilience, develop healthy coping skills, and achieve their full potential. Led by our Founder and Clinical Director, Dr. Amanda Mullin (Doctor of Clinical Psychology), our tightly knit, warm clinical team is dedicated to providing evidence-based, individually tailored care to support your family’s unique needs.

In this comprehensive guide, we demystify the process of seeking therapy, explain financial rebates in Australia, and outline how to prepare your child for a positive therapeutic experience.

1. How Do I Know If My Child Needs Professional Support?

Children and teenagers experience emotional ups and downs as a normal part of growing up. However, when challenges begin to interfere with their school life, social relationships, or overall daily happiness, it may be time to consider professional guidance.
As a parent, you know your child best. Key behavioural, routine, and emotional changes that suggest your child might benefit from support include:

Emotional shifts: Sudden emotional outbursts, persistent low mood, or excessive, unexplained worry and anxiety.
Physical & routine changes: Noticeable changes in sleep patterns, chronic fatigue, or sudden appetite fluctuations.
Social & academic withdrawal: Withdrawing from friends, avoiding activities they previously loved, or refusing to go to school.
Coping barriers: When their usual ways of managing schoolwork or social situations are no longer enough.

Seeking help early is not a sign of failure – it is a proactive way to equip your child with emotional tools that prevent minor worries from turning into deeper challenges in the future.

2. Therapy vs. Assessments: Finding the Right Pathway

At our clinic, we offer two primary clinical pathways that work hand-in-hand to support your child’s development. Your child does not necessarily need a formal diagnosis or assessment to begin ongoing therapy, but diagnostic testing can offer vital clarity:

Evidence-Based Therapy & Counselling: We provide tailored psychological support for children and teenagers overcoming anxiety, low mood, ODD, and behavioural challenges. Our psychologists are trained in gold-standard modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), alongside specialised approaches like Schema, Attachment-Based, and Play therapies.
Comprehensive Testing & Assessments: If your family is seeking answers regarding focus, learning struggles, or neurodevelopmental differences, we provide gold-standard diagnostic testing. This includes comprehensive assessments for ADHD, Autism, cognitive and IQ testing (for giftedness or learning difficulties), and Dyslexia.
Our Clinical Philosophy: We hold our practice to the highest ethical standards. Mindworx Psychology operates with complete clinical transparency – we never employ lock-ins for assessments or require mandatory “packages” for therapy sessions. Your family will only ever receive the exact sessions and reports that are clinically necessary.

3. The Big Question: “Do You Have After-School Appointments?”

As a busy parent, managing school, work, and extracurricular schedules is incredibly demanding. It is completely natural that your first question when contacting our intake team is, “Do you have after-school appointments?”
To accommodate busy Hills District families, our Norwest clinic maintains extensive opening hours:

Monday to Thursday: 7:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Friday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Saturday: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

While late afternoon and after-school slots (3:00 PM to 6:00 PM) exist, they are our most heavily requested times and often carry a waitlist.

Why Daytime Appointments are Often Clinically Superior

If you are offered a session during school hours, we highly encourage parents to consider it. From a clinical perspective, daytime sessions often yield significantly better therapeutic outcomes for children:

Optimal Emotional Regulation: After a long, demanding school day, children are emotionally and cognitively fatigued. Asking them to sit in a clinic and engage in therapeutic work at 4:30 PM often means they are too tired to get the full benefit.
Fresher Focus: Children are much more alert and receptive to learning new coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills in the morning or early afternoon.
School Support: Schools across the Hills District are generally highly supportive of students attending essential health and psychology appointments. These are officially recognised, justified absences, and our team regularly collaborates with local schools to ensure minimal disruption to your child’s learning.

4. Navigating Referrals and Medicare Rebates

Arranging mental health care in the Australian system is straightforward once you know the steps:

Medicare Rebates (Better Access Initiative): To claim Medicare rebates for individual therapy, your child will need to visit a GP, Paediatrician, or Psychiatrist. Your doctor will complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP), which currently allows eligible children with a diagnosed mental disorder to claim Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual sessions and 10 group therapy sessions per calendar year.
Telehealth Flexibility: Medicare rebates are also fully available for secure Telehealth (video) appointments on a permanent basis. This is a highly convenient option for families, provided your child has a quiet, completely private room where they cannot be overheard.
NDIS and Private Health: We accept both NDIS Plan-Managed and Self-Managed clients, and sessions can also be claimed directly through your private health insurance depending on your fund’s level of cover.
Medicare Exclusions: Please note that cognitive and diagnostic testing (such as formal ADHD or Autism assessments) are not covered by Medicare.

5. How to Get Started: Matching Your Child to the “Best Fit”

Research shows that the relationship between a child and their psychologist is one of the most critical factors in successful therapy.

Because of this, we do not believe in a “one-size-fits-all” matching process. Our experienced Intake Manager personally reviews your details, taking into account your child’s personality, challenges, and your scheduling needs, to match them with the clinician on our team who is the absolute best fit.

For younger children, we typically ask parents to attend the first session alone. This initial parent-only session allows us to gather a comprehensive developmental history and collaborate freely on clinical goals without the child in the room.
